Solved: Submission Problem

There was a problem submitting content for the last 15 hours. It was just solved and everything should be back to normal. No data was lost.

It was one of these little things that you do in the back office (with intent to improve the service), which cause a chain reaction which in the end, affects all kind of functionalities that you didn’t think it would. In this case, submitting content. As soon as we discovered it, we worked intensely to resolve the issue and I am happy to say now that it was resolved.

Again, we deeply apologize for the inconvenience and we thank you for your patience.

Pictures in Articles

A picture is worth a thousand words. Whether you like cliches or not, in the world of online content that’s definitely an axiom.

If you are publishing text articles with us, you should make it a habit to embed pictures, photographs or illustrations alongside your text. Well, where they are appropriate and relate to the content, of course, and not just throw them around your article. When you embed pictures with your content, you make your article more attractive and interesting to readers, and thus help to make the most out if its commercial potential.

Please remember though, that like the rest of your content, you are still required to be the copyright holder for what you publish, and that includes embedded pictures in articles.

You can see some examples in various articles that make it to the “Hot Content” section, such as this one and this one.

October Content Performance Analysis

The first days of each month are very busy here at Triond. Apart from the boom of content submissions we receive on those days (I guess it is a result of the payments we send on the end of the previous month) we also analyze the data that was just finalized regarding the previous month.

So we were sitting here one evening going over our October reports and a thought occurred to us: we find this data very valuable – otherwise we wouldn’t spend those wonderful autumn evenings going over it. Maybe you will find this data valuable too. Then why not share it with you?

So, I would like to start a new tradition here and to share some excerpts of this data with you – anything I think you will find valuable.

Since we’re dealing with content monetization, I would like to share some data about the best monetized content we had on October. Why is this data valuable?
Well, we are being asked questions like “What should I write about” and “What topics generate the highest revenues?”
My first answer is usually: “Share any valuable information you have” or “Write about anything you are passionate about”. I further explain that creating content on a very profitable topic will not work if the content you create is not of certain quality. What is this certain quality? It’s hard to say. But you can tell when someone writes an article that serves as a valuable source of information for its readers, and you can tell when the writing is “forced”.
Nevertheless, people are very versatile. Any of us human beings has more than one thing he can and wants to share. Some of us just don’t always know exactly what…

So the following list can serve you as a hint-list or as a focus when you submit your next content. Again – I am not saying you should force your next content item to fit within these subjects, all I’m saying is that if you have something to say on a topic that relates to these subjects, it will probably generate more revenue than content which topic whose not on this list.

Here we go:
Best textual topics for October were:

  1. Recreation
  2. Gaming
  3. Computers
  4. Kids and Teens
  5. Politics
  6. Graphic Design
  7. Social Sciences
  8. Sports
  9. Cooking
  10. News

Best pictures topics for October were:

  1. Family
  2. Insects
  3. Cats
  4. Tools
  5. Houses
  6. Autumn
  7. Culture
  8. Water
  9. Birds
  10. Kids

We still did not gather enough data regarding Audio and Video but I hope next month we will be able to tell you more about those exciting multimedia types.

Alright Copyright

Copyrights are important. In fact, in the business of publishing content, I am not sure there’s anything more important than this.

We would like to emphasize again to our members, that content you submit for publication must be your sole work of creation, or at least you must be the holder and owner of the copyrights for the items you publish. Otherwise you are prohibited by law to publish them.

You’ll notice we added a checkbox to the publish form, that you must check in order to verify that you are the copyrights holder of items you submit. For your convenience, you only have to check it once each time you visit.

We are Being Dugg

At about 8:00am PST a story by Allen Strider, “Fly a Remote Control plane that doesn’t suck for $30 bucks” was dugg up to 1st page of digg.com. To any of you who don’t know, digg.com is a website where users can submit links to other web pages, so that other users can vote for. The votes determine the order in which links are displayed within digg.com so that the most popular stories get to be positioned first on the 1st page.

digg.com is a very popular site and is quite a phenomenon. Being so popular, stories that are posted on the home page receive a lot of traffic. the volume of traffic can be so high and so sudden, that many websites that have stories on digg’s home page crash. This phenomenon is known as the “digg effect“.

Today we experienced our first digg effect. Starting at about 8:00am our server was flooded with 10,000s requests simultaneously. Many of you who tried to use Triond or to view any of our content websites received warning messages, error messages, incomplete pages or even no response at all. We apologize for that.
To us – this also came as surprise. As soon as we realized what was going on we started fixing the problems that occurred as a result of the digg effect, and managed to stabilize the server. While writing this, Allen Strider’s story is down in digg’s 2nd page – still receiving 1,000s of views – and our server performs just about good as always.

Of course, a digg effect is a very positive thing that can happen if it is handled right. Now that we’ve experienced it for the first time, we know what to expect the next time and I hope that now we can handle digg effects without problems similar to those occurred today.

Moments of Glory

There haven’t been many changes lately in Triond. However, we did a minor change to the homepage today, and seperated “Recently Published Pictures” from “Recently Published Articles”, now writers and shooters can share their moments of glory :) .

Also, behind the scenes we made a major improvement in the database logic, which now speeds up the homepage loading in about 250%. We will implement this further accross the system with time.

And just a reminder – promote your content by sharing it, use the “Share It” feature!

Happy Creating

Duplicates Duplicates

Why is duplicate content bad?
Why is duplicate content bad?

I guess the answer is clear. We have to decline many content submitted to us on account of it being duplicated. Duplicate content has 2 major flaws.

First, it usually infringes copyrights. Even if the content is not plaigiated, and is your sole work of creation, publishing it on several platforms infringes the copyright of the publishing service, as your agreement with the service states. For example, if you write an article and publish it both with the New York Times and the New York Daily Tribune, something is wrong there. Same goes for the Internet.

Second, we strive for quality content. Duplicate content is not quality. It deters readers that have already seen it elsewhere, and it sabotages marketing efforts. And since our aim is to monetize content, it should be of sufficient quality. If it is duplicate, it is insufficient.
